Abstract
A catalyst consisting of or containing a lamellar complex of sodium and carbon and having the formula NaC64 is used to convert propylene to methylpentene-2 at temperatures of at least 140 DEG C. Preferably the lamellar complex is used together with metallic sodium. Traces of aluminium, silica and iron may also be present. Provisional Specification 912,821 refers to the use of lamellar complexes of other alkali metals as catalytic constituents, e.g. complexes of lithium, potassium, subidium and caesium, especially KC8, KC16, KC24, KC36, KC48 and KC60 or mixtures thereof. Propylene feedstock may be pretreated with nickel on sepiolite for the removal of impurities. The catalyst may be used as a fluidized or fixed bed. Specifications 824,917, 825,902 and 912,826 also are referred to.ALSO:In a process for the production of a methylpentene-2 propylene is contacted with a catalyst consisting of or containing a lamellar complex of sodium and carbon of formula NaC64 at a temperature of at least 140 DEG C. When 4-methylpentene-2 is desired the reaction should be effected at 140-160 DEG C., whereas when 2-methylpenten-2 is desired the reaction temperature should be above 160 DEG C. The reaction pressure may be superatmospheric e.g. 50-4000 lbs./sq. inch gauge. The propylene feedstock should be free of impurities such as water, oxygen, allene and methylacetylene. It may however be diluted with inert gases such as nitrogen, methane, ethane or propane. The reaction may be carried out batchwise or continuously. Other prepared specified olefines are 4-methylpentene-1 and 2-methylpentene-1. Comparative examples are given. Specifications 824,917, 825,902 and 912,826 also are referred to.
