Abstract
A method of making a rigid composite structure which normally operates at temperatures in the order of 250 DEG -450 DEG F., particularly adapted for making structures such as clutch and brake components, includes forming a cavity by abutting at least two separate structural members of said structure, and introducing a liquid epoxy resin into the cavity to bond the members together by the epoxy resin, the method comprising the further steps of mixing the liquid epoxy resin prior to the introduction into the cavity with a single curing agent consisting of pyromellitic dianhydride, and a finely divided inorganic filler at a temperature not greater than approximately 125 DEG F. to form a homogenous suspension of the dianhydride and filler in the resin having a pot life of up to five days, flowing the suspension into the cavity and heating it to approximately 225 DEG -250 DEG F. for about three hours, the resulting epoxy resin product when subjected to the operating temperatures having enhanced properties, such as improved shrink characteristics and a high heat distortion temperature, and the bonding strength of the product being progressively increased during normal operation of the structure at temperatures above 125 DEG F. The method is applicable to the production of such components as those described in Specification 837,999, an electromagnetic friction clutch or brake unit being shown. Liquid epoxy resins listed have epoxide equivalents between 170 and 210. Specified fillers are aluminium silicate, of average particle size 4,8 microns and zirconium silicate with a particle size of about 74 microns. Pigments, plasticizers and flexibilizers can also be added.
