Abstract
911,997. Stuffing-box substitutes. BOLLING & CO. Inc., STEWART. Sept. 19, 1961 [June 28, 1961], No. 33467/61. Class 122 (5). Leakage of pressurized material from a machine chamber 15 along a shaft 11 is controlled by means of a sealing-ring 30 which is coaxial with the shaft and spaced therefrom by a leakage passage 13 leading away from the chamber 15 and through which the flow of leakage material is maintained and controlled in a predetermined manner by heat-exchange medium supplied to the ring 30. The shaft 11 drives a rotor 14 having blades 21 for mixing thermoplastic material in the chamber 15. The ring 30 which may be formed of two segments, is secured to the machine frame 17 by means of screws 40 through the interposition of shim rings 41 which serve to adjust the leakage passage between the ring and a shoulder 24 on the rotor. The heat-exchange medium, which may be steam, hot or cold water or brine, is supplied to, and exhausted from, a chamber 43 in the ring 30 by means of conduits 44, 45 fitted with control valves 50. The leakage material is bled from the portion 13b of the passage 13 through one or more passages 47 provided in the ring 30 and connected to a valve controlled discharge conduit 48. The inner periphery of the ring 30 is provided with helical grooves 51 which on rotation of the shaft causes a portion of the leakage material to flow back towards the chamber 15.
