[Also in Groups XIX and XXXVIII] A frequency discriminator comprises an input amplifier E1 and phase-splitter E2 to obtain equal and opposite voltages on the anodes of diodes E4, E5, to the common cathode of which are applied voltages varying in magnitude and phase according to the frequency of the input. These latter voltages are obtained from two CR circuits, C 1 , R 4 and C<SP>1</SP> 1 , R<SP>1</SP> 4 , shunted across the phase-splitter load resistors. The output voltage obtained between points 12 and 13 will be zero for a definite input frequency, and will vary in magnitude and polarity according to the magnitude and direction of deviation of the input frequency from this value. To prevent a false indication if the input should fail, a voltage is injected from the heater circuit to the screen grid of E1. The frequency of this signal is lower than the range of frequencies represented by the input signal, so that a finite output will be obtained from the discriminator when no input is supplied.
