Abstract

The surfaces of ceramic or cementilious articles are coated by brushing, wiping or spraying with the resinous reaction product of an epoxy compound and at least one aminoorganosilicon compound which is a hydrolysable aminoalkyl silane or a siloxane polymer or copolymer obtained therefrom, such as are described and claimed in Specifications 795,061, 874,150, 882,052, 882,052, 992,054, 882,060, 882,061, 882,069 and 882,096, (see Group IV(a)). The reactants are mixed together and may be applied as such or after allowing partial reaction (or ripening) to occur, with or without volatile organic diluents (liquid or solid), propellants and additives (in amount less than 85% by weight of the reaction product), such as antiblush agents, pigments, resins, dyes, fillers and anti-foam agents. The coatings are cured at ambient or elevated temperatures. In examples articles coated with the above reaction products are (1) a porcelain enamelled iron sink, (2) a porcelain sink, (3) an unglazed porcelain dish, (4) a mortar block, sandstone, limestone and an asbestos shingle, (6, 10) a porcelain enamel tray, (7) Terrazzo floor and (8) a Terra cotta tile. Other materials specified are the ceramics made by firing or baking kaolin or kaolin admixed with felspars, quartz, sand, mica, oxides of Fe, Ti, Mg, Ca, K or Na, silicates carbonates or aluminates, and cementilious materials comprising a hardened calcium hydroxide, carbonate or sulphate, alone or with known fillers. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 810,284.ALSO:The surfaces of ceramic or cementitious articles are coated with the resinous reaction product of an epoxy compound and at least one amino-organosilicon compound which is a hydrolysable aminoalkyl silane or a siloxane polymer or copolymer obtained therefrom, such as are described and claimed in Specifications 795,061, 874,150, 882,052, 882,054, 882,060, 882,061, 882,069 and 882,096. Numerous examples of epoxy compounds are given. The reactants are mixed together and may be applied as such or after allowing partial reaction (or ripening) to occur, with or without volatile organic diluents (liquid or solid), propellents, and additives such as anti-blush agents, pigments, resins, dyes, fillers and anti-foam agents. The reactants are used, e.g. in amount to provide from 0,05 to 5,0 epoxy equivalents for each amino hydrogen equivalent of the amino-organosilicon compound, and the additives are used in amount of less than 85% by weight of the reaction product. The coatings are cured at ambient or elevated temperatures. Examples are given. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 810,284.
