Abstract

910,623. Gas burners. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd., and WILLIAMS, C. A. H. May 18, 1961 [June 3, 1960], No. 19677/60. Class 75 (1). An apparatus for mounting at the top of an elevated flare stack and adapted to mix combustible gases and air so that the gases burn without producing smoke comprises two coaxial pipes 1, 2 of different diameters arranged endto-end to provide an annular space 3 for the entrance of air and a centrifugal nozzle 12 adapted to spray water into the combustible gases passing upwardly through the pipes 1, 2. The water spray causes turbulence of the gases and thorough mixing with the air induced through the space 3. The spray nozzle 12 is surrounded by a cowl 14 which catches unatomized water and directs it to an annular tray 6 drained by a line 7. The water is supplied to the nozzle from a tank by a pump. The tubes 1, 2 are enclosed in wind deflectors adapted to deflect air to the leeward side of the stack and comprising spaced metal slats 11 having tapered upper ends which are curved inwardly. The apparatus may be made of mild steel and is preferably tipped with stainless steel. A refractory lining may be provided. The flow of water may be correlated with the flow of gases. A gas pilot line and a flame propagation tube containing a sparking-plug project into the upper tube 1. Specification 795,664 is referred to.
