Abstract

910,520. Temperature indicators. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL. July 15, 1960, No. 24805/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 97 (3). A temperature-responsive element for indicating spoilage of a product such as frozen food, pharmaceuticals or photographic material, due to overheating comprises an inert oil or wax or mixture thereof having a melting range, i.e. not a sharply defined melting point, in the neighbourhood of the spoilage temperature and in contact therewith a permeable member which provides a diffusion path for the oil or wax when melted. By " inert " oil or wax is meant one which is not chemically reactive and undergoes little or no oxidation when exposed to air for long periods. In an example a greasy blob of a hydrocarbon oil, which is naturally coloured or contains colouring matter, is applied to the inner wrapper of a food product and the outer wrapper is then applied and the product frozen so that the blob is solidified. If the food product is exposed to temperatures above the spoilage temperature, the oil blob melts and diffuses through the outer wrapper, the speed of diffusion depending on the excess of temperature above the spoilage temperature.
