Abstract
910,233. Corrugating paper &c. PRECISION MECANIQUE LABINAL. Jan. 12, 1959 [Jan. 16, 1958; Nov. 27, 1958], No. 1103/59. Class 141. [Also in Group VIII] Flat sheet material or tubular strip material is provided with sharp corrugations of zig-zag form by firstly forming straight V-section corrugations in the longitudinal direction of the sheet or tube and subsequently forming transverse zig-zag folds by means of at least one transverse set of blades and two movable dies disposed symmetrically on opposite sides of the blades. Corrugating flat sheet material.-In one embodiment a flat web of paper &c. is corrugated longitudinally by passing it between spaced pairs of corrugated rollers, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), the corrugations in each pair being deeper than those in the preceding pair. The corrugated sheet then passes between two reciprocating sets of obliquely arranged blades 9, 10, Fig. 12. During the reciprocating movement of the blades, two movable dies arranged symmetrically on opposite sides of the blades reciprocate towards and away from the blades so as to hold the material during the formation of the transverse zig-zag folds. In a second embodiment, Figs. 37, 39, the longitudinally corrugated sheet is passed between upper and lower grids each comprising alternate carrier blades 117 and zig-zag forming blades 118 all having toothed edges corresponding to the cross-section of the corrugations. The blades 117, 118 are connected by chain links 119. The carrier blades 117 are supported at their ends in straight slideways 116a while the blades 118 are supported in slideways 116b which are provided with an oblique section 116c, Fig. 37. When the grid system is moved in the direction of the arrow F, the blades 118, as they pass the oblique section 116c, are moved transversely to form the zig-zag folds while the blades 117 move longitudinally and act as dies. The initial corrugation prior to folding by the grid system of Figs. 37, 39 may be effected by passing a sheet or a number of superposed sheets between two cylinders 128, 129, Fig. 46, carrying peripheral rollers 133. In a further embodiment. Fig. 47b, a flat sheet is passed between two series of converging endless belts 146, 147 comprising coil-springs guided in peripheral grooves in intermediate and terminal rollers 150c, 149, respectively. Having passed the rollers 149, the sheet is corrugated longitudinally but irregularly; it then passes through a transverse die 153 carrying springs 154a, 154b directed alternately upwardly and downwardly which serve to transform the corrugations into a regular pattern prior to passage through the grid system 117, 118. Corrugating tubular material.-In corrugating a cylindrical tubular strip the tube is first converted into a prism of star-shaped section by means of a series of rollers disposed uniformly in radial planes around the outside of the tube and a co-operating sprocket-wheel placed axially inside the tube. The star-section prism then passes through a first die 66, Fig. 31, and is provided with transverse folds by means of blades 73 arranged uniformly around the axis over a stationary plate 74. Each blade is connected with three angularly movable rings 78, 79, 82 by means of studs and grooves 76, 73a; 77, 73b; 80, 81, respectively. Rotation of the rings actuates the blades to form zig-zag folds in the prism while the die 66 and a second die on the opposite side of the blades are reciprocated axially to hold the material during the formation of the folds. Specifications 766,288, 815,522 and 815,523 are referred to.
