Abstract

910,076. Altering physical structure. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. June 15, 1961 [June 23, 1960; Feb. 2, 1961], No. 21744/61. Class 83 (4). A process for hardening a metallic surface comprises positioning a metal sheet, e.g. of steel, lead or brass parallel to the surface to be hardened and separated therefrom by a space, placing on the exterior surface of the sheet a layer of a detonating explosive having a velocity of detonation at least 25% greater than the sonic velocity of tile metal to be hardened, and initiating the explosive. The process is applicable to the hardening of manganese steel, stainless steel, vanadium steel and nickel, niobium, cobalt and their alloys. The air space between the said surface and the sheet is between 0.010 and 0.025 inch thick. The layer of explosive may be initiated at a corner, in the centre or at any point along an edge or, by using a line-wave initiator along an entire edge. The explosive layer may be bonded to the sheet or applied in a paste or gelled form. In an embodiment the metal specimen 2 whose upper surface is to be hardened is placed on an alloy steel support 1. A brass or steel sheet 3 is supported on said upper surface by means of projections 7 on the sheet to provide the necessary air space 8. The layer of explosive 4 on the outer surface of the sheet 3 is initiated by an electric initiator 5. Specifications 765,305 and 876,951 are referred to.
