Abstract

909,507. Positive clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. Aug. 16, 1960 [Aug. 17, 1959], No. 28420/60. Class 80 (2). A clutch synchronizing arrangement of the coned friction ring type incorporates a series of rollers mounted on radial pins and engageable with inclined surfaces on one of the rings to augment the axial engaging force, and capable of limited circumferential movement to permit operation of balking teeth. In the arrangement shown a reverse-gear pinion 7 is splined to a drive shaft 2 on which is freely mounted the first gear pinion 3, and to engage the latter a shift sleeve 21 is pushed to the left so that a friction ring 24 is engaged with a complementary ring 27 integral with pinion 7 through balls 52 and pin connections 46. As a result rollers 14 carried on radial pins 16 engage surfaces 32 or 33 of a series of notches formed on ring 24 to increase the axial engaging force, and under these conditions balk teeth 57, 63, 64 prevent full movement of sleeve 21. When synchronism is reached sleeve 21 is movable fully to the left allowing inner circumferential teeth thereon to engage clutch teeth 8 on pinion 7 and thus establish the drive between pinion 3 and shaft 2. A second embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), comprises a double friction ring arrangement with a single set of rollers, while in a third form, Fig. 14 (not shown), the radial roller-carrying pins are spring-loaded and their outer ends are tapered to prevent movement of the shift sleeve until synchronism is reached.
