Abstract

A mixer-settler is provided with electrodes to produce an electric field in that region of the settler compartments normally occupied by the emulsion band.ALSO:To assist the settling out of the phases of a liquid emulsion in a mixer-settler apparatus electrodes are provided to produce an electric field in that region of the settler compartment normally occupied by the emulsion band. The electrodes may be inside or outside the compartment walls, or said walls may act as one of the electrodes, the other electrode being positioned axially within the compartment. Where the settled phases are non-conducting, the electrodes need not be insulated. The Specification tabulates the results obtained for the emulsion band width in the settler compartment for different through-puts and phase ratios under the action of applied voltages of 0, 3,260, 9,780 and 16,300 volts respectively.
