Abstract

909,128. Making metal sheets; welding; shearing. BRITISH FEDERAL WELDER & MACHINE CO. Ltd., and TRIBE, T. F. May 30, 1960 [June 3, 1959], No. 18915/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a machine for joining strip-stock 12, strip is fed to a shearing station where its leading edge and the trailing edge of a preceding strip are sheared simultaneously, the trailing edge is then retained by a clamp 16 while the succeeding strip is fed forward to engage or overlap the trailing edge and a welding device 15 joins the strips automatically. The end of the succeeding strip is clamped to a carriage 27, Fig. 4, by a pivoted clamp 23 operated by cylinders 26, clamp 16 securing the end of the preceding strip also being operated by a cylinder 24. The limbs of a resilient holddown 34 on the upper cutter-head 41 press the strip-ends against the lower shear-blades 28, 29 as the head 41 is lowered by cylinders 36, 38, Fig. 5, operating through levers 37, 39, including a lost-motion connection 40 facilitating the return stroke effected initially by cylinder 36 alone. The severed ends fall down a shoot 19, the cover 21 of which is lowered by levers 22 connected at 45 to the cutter-head mechanism. Adjustment of the lower shear-blades 28, 29 is by screws 31, 33. After return of the head 41, the carriage 27 and clamp 23 are advanced by cylinders 46 in the table 18, which has bars 48 engaged in slots in the carriage. Thus the succeeding strip is advanced over the preceding strip held by clamp 16, until its end strikes the clamp. A clamp 14 operated by a cylinder 58 then clamps the strips to a copper electrode 17, while the strips are joined by roller-electrodes 15 lowered about a pivot 51, Fig. 3, on a carriage 50 which is traversed across the strips by a screw 54 driven by a belt 56 from an electro-motor 55. A brake 57 is provided, and cylinders 52 for lowering the rollers 15 beneath the carriage 50, which runs on rollers 82. A switch 64, closed by contact between a lever 63 and the strip when the roller-electrodes 15 run on to the strip, maintains the welding circuit while the rollers remain on the strip. At the end of a welding run the rollers 15 are raised and the carriage 50 returned by operation of a switch 60 by an abutment 61 on the carriage. A switch 62 operated by an abutment 65 stops the motor, switch 66 being in the welding circuit. The cylinders 24, 26, 36, 46, 52 and 58 operate the switches of a control system so that the various operations are performed automatically. Instead of a double-seam weld, a single seam may be effected, or the joint may be by flash, flash-and-mash, or spot-welding.
