Abstract

908,929. Friction gear; variable-speed gear. STANLEY-BRIDGES Ltd., and KILNER, S. R. Nov. 6, 1959 [Nov. 5, 1958], No. 39261/58. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (2). [Also in Group XXII] Gearing for use between an electric drill &c. 3, Fig. 1, and a driven spindle 11 comprises planetary balls 9, mounted in a cage 10 fast with the driven spindle and adapted to engage frictionally with a non-rotary reaction track 4 and with a driving race 7, the ball-engaging surface of the reaction track being of shallow configuration so that although when a tool mounted upon the driven spindle is out of engagement with a workpiece the balls lie loosely in the cage, whereby rotation of the driving race does not rotate the driven spindle, &c., as soon as the tool is applied to a workpiece the axial force produced thereby acting on the driven spindle wedges the balls into engagement with the race and the reaction track for torque transmission, the axial force moving the balls radially, while increasing the axial force reduces the speed at which the driven spindle rotates. In a modification, part of the reaction track 4, Fig. 2, is mounted in a spigoted end-cover 1b threaded into a main cover 1a and turned to adjust the force engaging the balls with the driving race, &c.
