908,691. Motor vehicles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. April 28, 1961 [April 28, 1960], No. 15440/61. Class 79(3). [Also in Group XXXIII] A motor vehicle capable of normal movement on roads and also of carrying out hovering flight comprises a set of road wheels, an engine for driving same, lifting rotors arranged symmetrically on each side of the vehicle, retractable supports carrying the rotors, means for driving the rotors and meansfor actuating the retractable supports so as to fold back the rotors to occupy the minimum space when the vehicle is required to proceed along the ground. The vehicle may have a conventional front engine 1 and four road wheels of which two or four are driven. The rotors, 10a, 10A, 10c and 10d are driven by a pair of gas turbine engines 2 coupled by gears 3 to a shaft 4 mounted on the axis of the vehicle which drives the rotors through gears 6 and shafts 7a and 7b. The shafts 7a and 7b have articulation points 14, Fig. 6, and are housed in arms 11 which carry the gear boxes 11 a for driving the rotors and are pivoted to the sides of the vehide. Support arms 13 having articulation points 13b are pivoted to the vehicle at 12a and to the bearing boxes 11a or 13a. When the rotors are arranged for compact stowage along the vehicle side, the pivot points 14 of the shaft 7 and the pivots 12 of the arms 11 are coaxial. The arms 11 may be retracted, with folding of the arms 13 by a hydraulic cylinder 15, the piston rod 16 of which is connected to a bell crank arm, the integral links 19, 20 and 21 of which are connected respectively through link 22 to arm 13 supporting rotor 10b, links 23, 24 and 25 to arm 13 supporting rotor 10d, and links 26 and 27 (Fig. 2) through a linkwork k arrangement 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35 to the arms 13 supporting rotors 10a. and 10b, the linkwork providing that all the arms are retracted simultaneously. Moving flight of the vehicle is obtained by inclining the axes of the rotors.
