Abstract

1-Bromo-1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropane is prepared by contacting a mixture of 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropene and hydrogen bromide at elevated temperature with activated charcoal. The compound is useful as an inhalation anaesthetic. 1,1,3,3,3-Pentafluoropropene is obtained by reacting 3,3,3-trifluoro-1,1,2-trichloropropene with antimony pentafluoride and hydrogen fluoride at 165 DEG C. under pressure, separating 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoro-1,2-dichloropropane from the reaction product by fractional distillation, and reacting that material with zinc dust.
