Abstract

907,851. Chimneys. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 19, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957], No. 37344/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 25. [Also in Group XXXIII] The wind-excited oscillations of a chimney stack are reduced or eliminated by the provision on the external surface of the stack of a fixed stake or rib extending helically for a significant part of the height of stack, the pitch, radial height, longitudinal extent, and number, of stakes being such that the formation of regular vortex streets downstream of the stack is reduced to negligible proportions or eliminated. The stake may extend over the upper one third to two thirds of the height of the stack. In the case of a wind tunnel test body of constant circular section, oscillation in the plane perpendicular to the direction of air flow is significantly reduced by the provision of three equally spaced helical strakes, of radial height between one fifth and one fiftieth of the diameter of the body, the helix pitch being about fifteen diameters, or seven and a half diameters. In the case of a conical body, there may be a constant ratio between the helix pitch and body diameter at any station.
