Abstract

907,644. Purifying water by freezing. CARRIER CORPORATION. Nov. 11, 1958, No. 36247/58. Class 29. Potable water is obtained from saline solutions such as sea water by freezing the solution to form a mixture of ice and concentrated solution, separating it, and washing it by potable water obtained by melting part of it. As shown, sea water is supplied by pipe 429 to a cylinder 405 containing a helix 407 and refrigerated by an evaporator jacket 409 forming part of a compression system. The ice and solution is supplied by pump 431 from the cylinder to separator column 414 where the ice separates by gravity, the solution leaving through pipe 433. Pump 431 is controlled by regulator 420 responsive to the liquid level in the column. Ice emerging from the top of the column is supplied by slinger 421 into a trough 423 where it melts and whence the melt water flows to the condenser 443 of the compression system to cool it. The heated water from the condenser flows through pipe 447 from which part flows through regulator 438 and pipe 437 to nozzles 425 above trough 423. This warm water melts the ice in the trough and also raises the temperature of the upper part of the column so that part of the rising ice melts and washes the remainder as it percolates through the ice. The rest of the potable water from pipe 447 and the solution from the column precool the entering sea water in exchanger 428.
