Abstract

Products of linear aromatic polyesters are dyed or printed using a colouring medium containing as a dye a derivative of an a -mono- or poly-hydroxyanthraquinone which bears in a free b -position vicinal to a hydroxyl substituent bound in an a -position or in a free a -position a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or aralkyl thioether radical. At the remaining a - or b -positions the dyestuff may bear simple radicals, e.g. -H or -OH. Substituents in the thioether radical specified are methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, tertbutyl, isoamyl, hydroxyl, methoxyl, ethoxyl, b -hydroxyethoxyl, b -cyanoethoxyl and nitro groups and/or halogen atoms. Of special interest are dyes of the formulae: <FORM:0907073/IV (b)/1> where A is <FORM:0907073/IV (b)/2> where R is -H or -OH, R1 is -H or -OH, n is 0, 1 or 2, X is a low molecular weight: alkyl, alkoxyl, hydroxyalkoxyl or cyanoalkoxyl group, a nitro group or a halogen atom. The dyestuffs may be obtained by reaction of hydroxy-halogen-anthraquinones with unsubstituted or substituted aryl or aralkyl mercaptans in organic solvents in the presence of alkaline reagents. The dye is preferably in finely divided form and the dye-bath may also contain swelling agents while the printing paste may contain thickening agents and printing auxiliaries as well. Examples are given of dyeing and printing using a number of dyestuffs which are: 1-hydroxy-4-phenylmercapto-anthraquinone, 1-hydroxy- 4-(41-chlorphenyl)- mercapto-anthraquinone, 1,8-dihydroxy-4-phenylmercapto-anthraquinone, 1,4-dihydroxy-2-(21-phenylethyl)-mercaptoanthraquinone, 1-hydroxy- 4-(41-methoxyphenyl)- mercapto-anthraquinone, 1-hydroxy- 4-(21-methylphenyl)- mercapto-anthraquinone, 1-hydroxy-4-(41-hydroxyphenyl-mercapto-anthraquinone and 1-hydroxy-4-(41-nitrophenyl)-mercapto-anthraquinone.
