Abstract
906,595. Rotary furnaces. SMIDTH & CO. A.S., F. L. April 15, 1959, No. 12831/59. Class 51 (2). A rotary kiln is divided over part of its length into longitudinal compartments by radial partitions 3, Fig. 1, each composed of heatresistant ceramic blocks 4 forced into face-toface contact with one another and held without bonding material between them by a compressive force produced by disc springs 6, Fig. 6, outside the kiln shell 1 and transmitted to the shell. The innermost blocks 4 bear against a common longitudinal member 5 coaxial with the kiln and the innermost blocks have metal shoes 9 fitted thereover, against which pins 7 bear under the adjustable pressure of springs 6. Two or more sets of partitions 3 may be formed at different axial positions with the kiln, with or without large gaps between them, each of which sets may be angularly staggered about the kiln axis in relation to the next. The opposed bearing faces of the blocks 4 may be curved, with the radii of curvature of the contacting faces differing or the blocks may be of various other forms as described in the Specification.
