Abstract

905,865. Rotary pumps or compressors. AUGUST, P. Oct. 5, 1960, No. 34101/60. Class 110 (2). A rotary pump or compressor having a gyratory piston, comprises a recess 9, Fig. 1, in the cylindrical casing 1 or a recess 30, Fig. 5, in the rotor 29 engageable respectively with a guide rib 8 on the rotor 7 or a guide rib 28 in the casing which besides guiding the movements of the gyratory rotor to maintain a small clearance between its circumference and the inner casing wall separates the suction and pressure sides of the pump or compressor. The side walls of the recosses are of convergentdivergent form as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 to form an effective seal in all positions of the rotor. The casing is preferably made of light weight metal, e.g., aluminium alloy, small cylindrical bodies 10 of hard or anti-friction metal then being partly embedded in the side walls of the recess 9 where the convergent and divergent portions meet. To reduce friction losses the thickness of the rotor is slightly less than the width of the casing with hard wearing pads 13 fitted in the casing walls against which the rotor rubs. The casing is formed externally with radial ribs 14 rigidly interconnected by an outer ring 15 to stiffen the casing and improve cooling of the casing. Alternatively, radial cooling ribs 17, Fig. 3, reinforced by an annular rib 16 deflect air currents produced by ventilators 23, 24 fixed to the driving shaft 4 to cool the compressor or pump. Additional cooling ribs 31, 32 are formed on the casing wall 12. Preferably, the compressor or pump is driven directly through the shaft 4 by an electric motor, the ventilator 24 being mounted in the motor casing to cool the motor and at the same time blow air through apertures 25 in a common casing wall 18 on to the ribs 16, 17. The pump or compressor is lubricated through a pipe 34 connected to a pressure-loaded oil container and ducts 33. The lubricating oil being supplied to the ball bearing 19, the bearing bush 6 and thrown outwardly by centrifugal force to lubricate the wearing pads 13.
