Abstract

Tempered, non-streaky thermoplastic sheeting <PICT:0905762/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0905762/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0905762/IV(a)/3> is made by heating such sheeting for a short time to a temperature at which it only retains a slight dimensional stability, and causing it to slide while being heated over parallel rods which are arranged to form a cylinder which rotates as a whole. The sheet may be heated by radiant heat from radiators arranged in the neighbourhood of the sheet passing over the rods, e.g. partly inside the cylinder and partly on the other side of the sheet. Alternatively, the sheet is heated by a current of hot air inside a container in which the cylinder is housed. Apparatus as shown comprises an axle A bearing a supporting disc B at either end, a plurality of heat-resisting rods C extending parallel to one another and supported at their ends on the discs so as to form a cylinder, the distance between any two rods being between 50 and 200 mm., means for rotating the discs, means for guiding a sheet over the cylinder in sliding contact with the rods, e.g. rollers G, H, and means for heating the sheet while in sliding contact with the rods, e.g. radiators E, arranged along the travelling path of the sheet passing over the rods, or a container J through which a current of hot air is passed and in which the cylinder is housed. The rods may each have a diameter of 3-30 mm., especially 5-15 mm., and a length of about 600 mm., and the cylinder may have a diameter of 420 mm. The rods may be made of ceramic material, or of iron, surrounded by porcelain tubes.
