Abstract

905,289. Polyfocal contact lenses. PLASTIC CONTACT LENS CO. Sept. 15, 1959 [Oct. 6, 1958], No. 31438/59. Class 97 (1). A poly-focal or mono-focal contact lens is adapted to adhere to the cornea by the lacrimal layer's capillary attraction and has means to prevent it from rotating on the cornea. An example of a bifocal lens is shown in Fig. 2, in which the radii of curvature of zone 30 are chosen for distant vision and those of zone 32 for near vision. The posterior radii of the zone may be equal in order to prevent the lens from rotating either its centre of gravity is arranged to be below its axis or its posterior surface is made toric to correspond with the shape of the eye. The centre of gravity may be lowered by (1) making the lower zone thicker than the upper zone, for example, by making zone surfaces eccentric, (2) by inserting in the lower zone a heavier piece of glass or plastic, in which case the change of power may be due to the different refractive indices of the zones and not to their different radii, or (3) by replacing the circular outlined lens by one having the outline shown in Fig. 8. One way of forming the lens (see Fig. 12) is to mould a large lens 56, the radii of which correspond with those required for one of the zones and then cut or mould a section 132 of this lens to the curvature required for the other zone. Several lens L<SP>4</SP> may then be cut from this large lens. Specification 882,907 is referred to.
