Abstract

Modified clay complexes are obtained by reacting a clay, in which at least some of the exchangeable ions other than sodium ions have been replaced by sodium ions, with an onium compound, or compounds, defined as A(y - 1) X+B-, where y is an integer having a numerical value equal to the highest positive valence of X, X is selected from N, P, As, Sb, O, S, Se, Sn and I, A(y - 1) represents at least one organic radical, preferably including at least 10 carbons, and as much hydrogen as is necessary to satisfy the formula, and B is an anionic group, such as hydroxide or acetate. The clay may be bentonitic, and preferably has at least 90% of the exchangeable ions as sodium ions before reaction with the onium compound. The exchangeable ions may be replaced by means of ion exchange resins, especially high capacity resins such as the sulphonated styrene type cation exchangers, for example Amberlite 1R 120 ("Amberlite" is a Registered Trade Mark) and Nalcite HCR. A dilute slurry of the clay may be passed through a fixed bed of the resin, which may be regenerated by a concentrated sodium chloride solution. Alternatively the exchangeable ions in the clay may be replaced by repeatedly leaching the clay with a solution of a sodium compound, for example sodium chloride. The thus modified clay may be reacted with the onium compound either both in the form of dilute dispersions, or in some cases the onium compound may be concentrated. Onium compounds specified include triphenyl phosphonium halides, triphenyl arsonium halides, triphenyl stibonium halides, dialkyl or diaryl sulphonium halides, dialkyl or diaryl selenonium halides, 2:5 dialkyl gamma pyrone hydrochloride, ammonium salts, especially quaternary, for example dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium chloride and dimethyl octadecylbenzyl ammonium chloride, and amines. The modified clays of the invention may be incorporated with hydrocarbons to form greases. In an example 60 grams of the modified clay were mixed with 910 grams of a solvent refined neutral paraffin oil, 30 grams of acetone were added, the mixture stirred further, and then pumped through a colloid mill.
