Abstract
Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising the complex formed by reacting an aluminium monoalkyl dihalide, violet crystalline titanium trichloride and an organic electron-donor compound containing nitrogen, the molar ratio between the electron-donor compound and the aluminium monoalkyl dihalide being 0,5\sB0,1. Olefins such as propylene, butene and 4-methyl-pentene-1 may be polymerized to polymers of high isotactic content. The aluminium compound may be ethyl aluminium dichloride or ethyl aluminium dibromide. The electron-donor compound may be pyridine, dimethylamine, diethylamine, dipropylamine, dibutylamine, monomethylamine, monoethylamine, monopropylamine, monobutylamine, diphenylamine, methylaniline, ethylaniline, propylaniline, butylaniline, aniline or dimethylformamide. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of a solvent, e.g. n-heptane or toluene. The titanium trichloride may contain aluminium trichloride in solid solution.
