Abstract

903,468. Automatic gain-control. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 27, 1961 [May 2. 1960], No. 15354/60. Class 40 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] The invention relates to a television relay system in which a number of television signals, modulated upon different carrier frequencies, are amplified in an amplifier comprising cascaded stages 1, 2, 3 of which 1 is linear and 2, 3 are normally linear but are liable to be driven into non-linear operation. According to the invention, beat frequencies between the various carrier frequencies generated by non- linear operation are separated from the output of stage 3 by means of a filter 4, are amplified by an amplifier 5 and rectified by a rectifier 6 to produce a control voltage which when smoothed is used to control the gain of stage 1, in such a manner that the input to stages 2, 3 is reduced, so reducing the amount of non- linear operation. The filter 4 may alternatively be tuned so as to pass the beat frequency produced between the sound and vision carriers of any one of the television signals. The controlled stage 1 may alternatively comprise a variable attenuator.
