Abstract
902,646. Diffusion pumps. EDWARDS HIGH VACUUM Ltd. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 29, 1957], No. 37353/57. Class 71. The working vapour of a diffusion pump is supplied by a boiler comprising a vertical or inclined heated surface down which liquid is caused to flow and is vaporized, the liquid being evenly distributed to the top of the surface. In the boiler shown in Fig. 2 the wall is formed from a cylinder 7 provided with grooves 8 along which the film of liquid flows. A heating element 9 is housed in the cylinder 7 and heats the surface causing the liquid to vaporize and pass through pipe 10 to the nozzle of the diffusion pump. The liquid is supplied by a pipe 5 to a channel 6 and this overflows to pass down the cylinder, unvaporized liquid is returned to a supply tank through an outlet 13. A second heater 21 may be provided to heat the bottom 20 of the boiler. The vapours may be divided and be fed to separate nozzles as in Fig. 4 (not shown). In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the inclined heated surface 28 delivers vapours to two outlets 29, 31. The boiler may comprise two heated surfaces in which the less volatile vapours are allowed to condense and are delivered for revaporation on the second surface as in Fig. 6 (not shown). Several pumps each having suitable boilers may be arranged in series. Specification 734,757 is referred to
