Abstract
A method of making a ceramic article comprises heating a mixture of from 3 to 30% by weight of an organopolysiloxane and from 70 to 97% by weight of a volatile free ceramic material having a softening point above 800 DEG C., at 500 DEG C. The organopolysiloxane has a total of from 1 to 2 substituents selected from monovalent hydrocarbon radicals containing less than 7 carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms per silicon atom there being at least an average of one hydrocarbon radical per silicon atom e.g. dimethylsiloxane, monomethlysiloxane, monoethylsiloxane, monovinylsiloxane, &c. The siloxanes may be homo-polymers or co-polymers. Some examples of ceramic materials are aluminium silicate, magnesium silicate, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, tungsten carbide, silicon nitride, zirconium silicate, lithium aluminate, titanium carbide, molybdenum carbide, boron nitride, alumina, silica, zirconia, titania, potassium titanate, also mixed silicates of calcium, aluminium lithium and magnesium. The materials may be derived from artificial or natural sources. Any catalyst suitable for curing organosilicones may be added e.g. lead stearate, stannous octoate. Mould release agents such as calcium stearate or pigments e.g. ferric oxide may also be added. The mixture is moulded under pressure and heated at a temperature between 500 DEG and 800 DEG C. for several hours.
