Volume compression and expansion is used at each end of a transmission channel suffering from delay distortion that is more pronounced at high-frequencies than at low frequencies and it is arranged that the side-bands produced by compression of the low-frequency speech signals are made to lie in a region of the channel producing less delay distortion than the region in which the side-bands of the high-frequency speech signals are made to lie. Delay distortion is less acceptable at low frequencies than at high frequencies. Should the system employ pilot control of the compander, the pilot signal is transmitted in the low frequency, low distortion, end of the channel; but should the pilot signal be used for output voltage regulation this is not done.
