900,848. Clutch control. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Oct. 13, 1958 [Oct. 11, 1957], No. 31881/57. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIII] Means responsive to the difference in speeds between the input and output shafts of a clutch and also responsive to the difference in accelerations between these shafts either control the engagement of the clutch or maintain the speeds and accelerations within an acceptable limit for such engagement. As shown, a marine propulsion unit comprises a main " ahead " steam turbine 10 coupled to a reversing turbine 11 and to a propeller 12, and a "crusing" turbine 13 connected to the propeller through a clutch 14. The input and output shafts of the clutch are connected to electrical speed-responsive signal generators 15, 16 connected to electronic apparatus sensitive to the difference in speeds and accelerations between the turbines and which feeds an output signal to an amplifier 18 only when the difference in speeds and in the accelerations lie within predetermined ranges. The amplifier feeds a solenoid engaging the clutch. Specifications 704,862, 704,863, 824,975 and 875,223 are referred to.
