Abstract

An antibiotic, which is cytostatic, is produced by the anaerobic fermentation of bacteria which are capable of forming propionic acid by the degradation of carbohydrates in a nutrient medium containing carbohydrates and having a pH of 6.8 to 7.2, the cultivation being continued for 3 to 5 days at a temperature of 20-40 DEG C. and thereafter isolating the antibiotic from the fermentation broth. The broth is preferably clarified and extracted with an organic solvent such as ethyl ether, the antibiotic being recovered by evaporating the solvent in vacuo. Specified bacteria are Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Propionibacterium rubrum, Propionibacterium technicum and Clostridium propionicum. The antibiotic may be used medicinally as a cytostatic or for the treatment of rumenatony in ruminants (see Group VI).ALSO:An oral or rectal preparation or injection comprises as an essential ingredient thereof the cytostatic substance isolated from a culture broth in which has been anaerobically fermented bacteria capable of forming propionic acid by the degradation of carbohydrates especially Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Propionibacterium rubrum, Propionibacterium technicum and Clastridium propionicum. The culture medium may be used for the treatment of rumenatony in ruminants. Sterile aqueous or aqueous alcoholic suspensions may be used for injection.
