Freely depending plates 5<SP>x</SP> (Fig. 5) ensure that the central portions of a hopper 20 discharge before the lateral portions; this is said to prevent arching of the material. The plates may be flexible and as few as one may be provided. They may deliver into a boot 21 projecting at one end of the hopper or to an endless conveyer (Figs. 1-3, not shown) below the hopper. The hopper may form the body of a vehicle. Each plate 5<SP>x</SP> may extend for the full length of the hopper, or may be divided into several lengths.
