Stress corrosion of apparatus constructed of or lined with titanium or a titanium base alloy when used in the presence of methanol containing chloride ions is prevented by adding iodide and/or cyanide ions to the methanol. in an example the addition of 5000 p.p.m. of sodium iodide to boiling methanol containing 500 p.p.m. of sodium chloride prevented stress corrosion of an immersed titanium test piece.
