Abstract
<PICT:0898374/III/1> An apparatus, suitable for effecting continuous reactions such as the liquid or vapour phase reaction of a hydrocarbon material with a gaseous reactant comprising hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure in presence of a solid catalyst, comprises in combination a vertically arranged chamber, supporting means 31 for a mass of solid contact material in the upper portion thereof, an indirect heat exchange means 36 disposed below and spaced from said supporting means and occupying a substantially smaller space than that provided for said mass in said upper portion, inlet conduit(s) 28, 33 connecting with said upper portion, a liquid collector section 40 in the lower portion of the chamber below the heat exchange means, a liquid discharge conduit 41 extending from the collector section and a gas withdrawal conduit 44 connecting with the chamber at a point above the collector section; as shown, the gas withdrawal conduit may constitute a gas recirculation conduit having one end connecting with the chamber between the collector and heat exchange sections and the other end at a point above the heat exchange section, e.g. above the solid contact material, the recirculation conduit and control valve 45 being used in conjunction with the bleed line 46 and valve 47. The additional inlet conduit 34 is an optional feature. In the embodiment shown, liquid level device 42 and valve 43 operate so as to maintain a liquid level in the collector section, but 42 need not be a controller of the type employing a float. Specific applications of the invention mentioned are: hydrogenating a gas oil over chromia alumina, desulphurizing a hydrocarbon oil with cobalt sulphate and/or molybdenum sulphide on, e.g. alumina, and hydrogenation with, e.g. nickel-kieselguhr.ALSO:Gas oils are hydrogenated, e.g. over a chromiaalumina catalyst, at a hydrogen pressure of 68 atmospheres and a temperature of about 343 DEG C., using an apparatus characterized by a vertical arrangement of from the top downwards, a fixed catalyst bed, an indirect heat exchange means and a liquid collector section (see Group III).
