Abstract
897,316. Recognizing characters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 25, 1959 [Nov. 26, 1958], No. 40113/59. Class 106 (1). In a character-reading apparatus a sensing device is used which provides two different signals from a single scan over the character. In the form of Fig. 1, a magnetic sensing head consists of a series of pairs of magnetic core elements 11, 12, separated at the bottom by a gap 13 for co-operation with the character and at the top by a gap 25 which controls the flux induced. Alternate pairs are oppositely disposed for convenience and form two groups. In one group the control gaps 25 vary from small to large from one side to the other of the head and the gaps of the other group vary from large to small. The groups are each linked by a winding 20 which develop at terminals 23, 24 a signal proportional to the sum of the magnetic flux changes in all the cores of the associated group. The group of which the cores have the smaller control gaps on the left is most sensitive on that side whereas the other group is most sensitive on the right. As the head passes over a character therefore the terminals 23 give a greater signal than terminals 24 in response to character areas on the left-hand side and vice versa. The core elements are bonded together in a block 19. Another way of obtaining the graded sensitivity is to space the reading gaps away from the character by different amounts as shown in Fig. 3. In another modification, all the core elements are similar and there are no control gaps. Individual windings, one for each core, are given weighted numbers of turns and the windings associated with each group are connected in series. In Fig. 5 the same result is achieved in an optical system, the character being projected by lens 57 and prism 56 on to slotted mask plates 50. Graded filters 49 placed in front of the plates 50 render photo-cell 40a more sensitive to character parts at the upper end of the slot and photocell 40b more sensitive to parts at the lower end.
