Abstract

896,998. Making valves; pipe-end closing; bending; welding by fusion; machine-tool details. SAUNDERS VALVE CO. Ltd. Aug. 26, 1958 [Aug. 30, 1957], No. 27413/57. Classes 83 (2), 83 (3) and 83 (4). A body for a diaphragm valve is made up of two coaxial end fittings 12, Fig. 1, a weir flange 14 perpendicular to the end fittings, a central weir plate 13 parallel to the end fittings 12 and having a concave seating surface on which the diaphragm closure member seats, and tubular members 11, the parts being secured together by fusion joining, e.g. welding or soldering. Each tubular member 11 is made from a tube 21, Fig. 4, which may be seamless and cylindrical or fabricated by bending and welding a sheet metal blank. A mandrel consisting of an elliptical disc 29 formed in a number of sections so as to be expansible is inserted in one end of the tube 21. The disc has an outer surface formed so that the axis of the mandrel is at an angle of about 15 degrees to the axis of the tube. Rotation of the nut 35 causes a thrust plate 36 to push the sections over a conical portion 33 of the shaft 27 carrying the nut 35 and the mandrel bends the tube to an elliptical section. With the tube 21 mounted on the mandrel the end is parted off providing a circular end section and a cylindrical groove 25 is formed. The end fittings 12 which together with the weir flange 14 and plate 13 are formed by flame cutting and machining are shaped to receive the circular ends of the tubes 21. The-mandrel is removed and each tube is welded in the end fitting 12. With the assembly fixed in a press, Fig. 5, the other end of the tube 21 is squeezed and partially flattened between a fixed die 42 and a die 44 actuated by a fluid-pressure ram 48 and guided by guides 47 which take side thrust. The weir flange 14 and plate 13 are welded together. The assembled tubes 21 are partedoff to length and supported on a jig, Fig. 6, by brackets 49, 51 while a hole is bored out to receive the weir flange 14. The parts are then assembled together in inverted position, Fig. 7, on the same jig with the brackets 51 removed and brackets 61 inserted to support a stay 15. After tack welding the assembly is removed and all seams welded. Specifications 434,684 and 516,526 are referred to.
