Abstract
896,816. Coated polyolefin films. SCOTT PAPER CO. March 15, 1960 [March 20, 1959], No. 9069/60. Class 140. A protective wrapping material is produced by applying to a polyolefin film an adherent persistent liquid coating comprising a surfacemodifying agent which comprises (a) aliphatic monohydric alcohols having at least seven carbon atoms which are liquid at ordinary temperatures and which have a boiling-point above 175‹ C., (b) aliphatic polyhydric alcohols, (c) esters of long-chain fatty acids and polyhydric alcohols, or (d) mineral oil or silicone oil. The coating may be a thin liquid layer, e.g. 0.5 to 0.7 mils. thick, comprising the surface-modifying agent admixed with a surfactant. The coating may comprise an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, e.g. glycerol, present in amount from 4 to 16 milligrams per square meter of film surface, in admixture with a surfactant such as a polyoxyalkylene derivative of a long-chain fatty acid ester and a long-chain fatty acid ester mixture, e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate in admixture with sorbitan monolaurate. The coating of polyethylene, polypropylene and polybutylene sheets is described. Specified surface modifiers are dihydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol; trihydric alcohols such as glycerol; higher polyhydric alcohols such as hexahydric alcohols, sorbitol and mannitol which may be dissolved in water to form a heavy syrup; vegetable oil, e.g. peanut, olive, cottonseed, coconut and castor oil. Certain surfactants such as esters of a long-chain fatty acid, e.g. lauric acid, and a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. sorbitan, may serve in themselves as surface modifiers. Other surfactants, which may be non- ionic, cationic or anionic, are the polyoxy alkylene derivatives of long-chain fatty acid esters, and sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate. The coating may be applied in a diluent, e.g. water, aqueous ethyl alcohol and aqueous methyl alcohol, which is eliminated by drying, e.g. at an elevated temperature.
