Abstract

896,468. Wire rope couplings. FABER, K. A., and OLESEN, I. J. May 24, 1960 [June 8, 1959], No. 19530/59. Class 109. A wire rope clamp having two or more clamping jaws insertable in a sleeve in a manner causing them to grip rope parts has the inner faces of the jaws provided with interspaced ribs of deformable material. After the clamp has been assembled on the rope parts, it may be heated in a high frequency field to soften those portions of the ribs positioned nearest the rope parts. The jaws may be made entirely of deformable material or linings may be provided; in some cases the linings may be constituted only by the ribs 20. Lining material may be copper, lead, soft aluminium alloy or a plastic. For jaws with integral ribs an alloy of 94% aluminium, 6 % silicon is suggested or, alternatively, nylon may be used. Although the preferred way of clamping the jaws on to the rope is by having threaded surfaces of corresponding conicity on the jaws 16, 18 and on an outer casing 26, plane inclined surfaces may be used, e.g. of square cross-section, and the forcing means may be a union nut on the outer casing. According to the Provisional Specification, wire 'or foil of soft metal may be wound round the rope, or the rope and/or gripping surfaces of the jaws may have a plastic adhesive applied.
