Abstract

896,109. Reactors. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM: ROESSLER. Sept. 5, 1960 [Sept. 4, 1959], No. 30567/60. Class 39(4). In a reactor in which the fuel and/or breeder material is in the form of small elements, e.g. balls, the elements are guided along a unical spiral path through the core so as to traverse the different zones of neutron flux and hence all the elements become exposed to the same flux. As shown in Fig. 2 the reactor comprises four spiral tubes 21.. 24 nested inside one another, the elements of fuel and/or breeding material passing through the tubes. The tubes are filled with a heat transfer liquid and situated in a liquid-filled core (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). Either liquid may be a sodium-potassium or bismuth-lead alloy, an organic compound or water. The tubes are in heat exchange relationship with the core liquid which may serve both as coolant and moderator. Movement of the elements is obtained by discharging one or more from the lower ends of the tubes and introducing a corresponding number at the top ends. If the density of the elements is less than that of the liquid in the tubes the elements are discharged from the upper ends and introduced at the lower ends.
