Abstract

Compositions for topical and local application in the treatment of fungal infections comprise from 0.1 to 1.0% by weight of a tri-, tetra-or (preferably) a penta-halo substituted phenol, the halogen atoms being the same or different and from 0.1 to 2.5% by weight of phthalic acid or a nuclear chloro-substituted derivative thereof and a therapeutically-acceptable carrier. There may optionally be present basic inorganic compounds, e.g. alkali and alkaline earth metal and hydroxides, buffers, e.g. alkali and alkaline earth metal phosphates, a wetting agent and/or a solvent for the phenol and the acid. Reference is made to compositions suitable for use as a dentifrice mouthwash, nasal spray, nose drops, vaginal douche, foot bath, and for the treatment of the hair and scalp and infections of the colon and rectum.
