895,322. Sterilizing canned and bottled goods. NORMINGTON, H. April 29, 1960 [Aug. 31, 1959], No. 15074/60. Class 49. In an apparatus for continuously sterilizing containers, e.g. bottles or cans, filled with liquids or semi-solids, the containers 30 are loaded into holders 28 rotatably mounted transversely on a conveyer 12, comprising spaced parallel chains 14, 15, guided by sprockets 17-25, which pass through a series of paths within a vessel 10, rotary motion being imparted to each container by means of pinion gears 35 affixed to the holders 28 engaging gear racks 36, rotation at the sprockets being prevented by blocks 40 affixed to the holders engaged in guides (not shown) provided adjacent to the peripheries of the sprockets. The containers 30 are loaded into the holders from a continuously-moving grouping conveyer by means of a pocket rack 62 which pivots from a vertical position to a horizontal one, a pusher bar 142 engaging the bottoms of the containers and moving them into the receptacles of a holder 28. The containers on the conveyer traverse successively through a sealing tank 39, along racks 36a, 36b, and 36c in a heating chamber, through a second sealing and cooling tank 45 and finally along a rack 36f under a cooling water spray before being removed from the holders by ejector rods (not shown) into a pocket rack 136 which positions the containers upright upon a removal conveyer 130.
