Abstract

894,951. Capacitors. TELEGRAPH CONDENSER CO. Ltd. (Sprague Electric Co.). Oct. 5, 1960, No. 34143/60. Class 37. A solid electrolytic capacitor comprises two electrodes, one consisting of multiple metal members each having a dimension in one direction many times that in any other direction, in electrically conducting contact with each other, which surfaces are coated with an electrolytically formed dielectric layer; an electrolyte of electronicallyconductive semi-conductor material surrounding the elongated surfaces and filling the interstices between them, and an electrically-conductive material contacting the semi-conductor to constitute the remaining electrode. In Fig. 1, a mass of plural intermingled threads 10 of film forming metal such as aluminium or tantalum in contact at multifold crossing-points 12, constitutes anode 13, and is coated with a dielectric oxide layer 14 (Fig. 2); a semi-conductive solid electrolyte 15 of, e.g., lead dioxide extending between the threads and round the dielectric film being coated with low resistance conducting material to constitute the cathode 16. The solid electrolyte may constitute lead sulphide admixed with carbon, or lead dioxide to improve conductivity, or manganese dioxide; and the anode may be of copper coated with a cuprous oxide or cuprous sulphide dielectric film, or of tantalum coated with the oxide. The anode may also be formed of an unglazed porous ceramic structure which is coated with tantalum by hydrogen reduction of tantalum chloride deposited from solution, or by compaction from aluminium shavings, elongated particles of tantalum, or tantalum dendrite crystals.
