Abstract

In a process for removing organometallic catalysts composed of organometallic compounds of Group I to III of the Mendeleef Periodic Table and compounds of transition metals of Group IV to VIII from solutions of copolymers of a -olefins containing 2 to 10 carbon atoms and/or such olefins and diene hydrocarbons, water is added to the copolymer solution sufficient to convert the metal compounds into metal hydroxides, and the latter are then separated from the copolymer solution. The polymerization may be arrested by the addition of an alcohol, e.g. methanol, propanol or butanol, before the addition of water. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butene-1 and pentene-1 and specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, 1, 3-pentadiene, 1, 4-pentadiene and 1, 5-hexadiene. Examples describe the treatment of solutions obtained by polymerizing (1) ethylene, butene-1 and 1, 5-hexadiene in xylene in the presence of tributoxy titanium chloride and aluminium trihexyl; (2) ethylene and propylene in monochlorobenzene in the presence of titanium tetrachloride and diethyl aluminium fluoride; (3) ethylene, butene-1 and isoprene in methylcyclohexane in the presence of vanadium tetrachloride and diethyl aluminium chloride; and (4) ethylene and propylene in toluene in the presence of vanadium oxy trichloride and diethyl aluminium chloride. The water may contain a small amount of a conventional emulsifier.
