Abstract
894,487. Producing aluminium-silicon alloys. ALUMINIUM-INDUSTRIE-A-G. Aug. 26, 1960 [Aug. 31, 1959], No. 29554/60. Class 82(1). [Also in Group XI] Aluminium silicon alloys are formed in an electric resistance furnace by charging a mixture of carbon and oxidic raw materials of silicon and aluminium into the furnace at 2050‹C.- 2200‹C., rapidly heating the mixture and continuously transferring the molten alloy to a chamber which is maintained at a temperature between the alloy melting temperature and 1600‹C. The mixture which may be pelletised and preheated contains 27À4% raw kaolin, 23À8% burnt kaolin, 23À6% Al 2 O 3 , 2À1% Si O 2 and 23À1% charcoal. Sulphur as sulphides or sulphates may also be added and the rate of feed of the mixture into the furnace regulates the temperature. A specific alloy produced contains 76%Al, 23À1% Si and 0À9% impurities such as Fe and Ti. The resistance furnace 1 contains a vertical graphite reduction crucible 7 with a perforated base, surrounded by a graphite cylinder 8 and embedded in graphite granules 3. A graphite crucible 9 also with a perforated base and a clay graphite collecting crucible 10 are supported below the reduction crucible, the molten alloy cooling in 9 and collecting in 10. Additional resistance heating may be provided by heating rods in the crucible 7 (Fig. 3 not shown) and cooling in crucible 9 is effected by cooling coils. A temperature control may be incorporated in chamber 10 which protrudes from the furnace and is insulated.
