Abstract
Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0894154/IV (a)/1> in which R is an acrylic organic radical of less than 7 carbon atoms containing at least one carbon to carbon double bond and R1 is chlorine, bromine, alkyl, OR, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkadienzyloxy or alkenyloxyalkoxy may be incorporated in resins and plastics to give protection against ultraviolet light. The compounds may be copolymerized with ethylenic monomers such as styrenes, acrylic compounds and vinyl compounds or may be included with unsaturated modifiers of polyester resins such as those obtained from dicarboxylic acids, at least 20% of which are unsaturated, and polyols. The unsaturated modifiers mentioned are styrenes and alkyl esters. Examples describe the incorporation of 2, 21-dihydroxy-4, 41-diallyloxy benzophenone into a polyvinyl chloride composition containing decrotyl phthalate, Ba-Cd laurate and a trianryl phosphite and the copolymerization of styrene with 2,21-dihydroxy-4,41-diallyloxy-, dimethallyloxy and dicrotoxy-benzophenone in the presence of benzoyl peroxide.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0894154/IV (b)/1> in which R is an acyclic radical of less than 7 carbon atoms containing at least one carbon to carbon double bond and R1 is chlorine, bromine, alkyl, OR, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkadienyloxy or alkenyloxyalkoxy. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a 2,21,4-trihydroxy-41-substituted benzophenone or a 2,21,4,41-tetrahydroxy benzophenone with an alkenyl halide to etherify the para hydroxy groups or with a chlorohydrin and then with an alkenyl halide to give an alkenyloxy-alkoxy substituent, or with an acetylene or an alkenylacetylene to give an alkenyloxy or alkadienyloxy substituent. p-Hydroxyalkyl - o - hydroxy-benzophenones may be reacted with acetylenes to give the corresponding p-alkenyloxyalkoxy compounds and haloalkoxybenzophenones may be dehydrohalogenated to give alkenyloxy benzophenones. Examples describe the preparation of compounds in which R is alkyl, methallyl, crotyl and allyloxyethyl, and R1 is allyloxy, methallyloxy, crotyloxy, allyloxy-ethoxy, methoxy, ethoxy, lauroxy, vinoxy, methyl, butyl, chloro and bromo.
