Abstract

A composition for moulding of destaticized articles comprises a polymer of a vinylidene monomer and a destaticizing additive comprising (i) the reaction product of an alkanolamine with an alkyl carboxylic acid or with an amide or a Group II or III metal salt of said acid, and (ii) free alkanolamine, or free alkyl carboxylic acid or an amide or a Group II or III metal salt of said acid. The polymers specified are those derived from ethylene, propylene, styrene, methyl styrene, dichlorostyrene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, tetrafluorethylene, vinyl chloride, vinylidine chloride, acrylonitrile, butadiene, vinyl acetate, methacrylates, halogenated acrylates and mixtures such as styrene/acrylonitrile and styrene/butadiene. Mixtures of polymers are also specified, in particular polystyrene+polybutadiene+ polyacrylonitrile. The preferred compounds for the additive (i) are triisopropanolamine and pelargonic or nonanoic acid and it is stated that the reaction product may be an alkanolammonium carboxylate salt. The alkycarboxylic acid salts used in the examples are those of Zn, Ca, Al, Cd, Pb and Mg. The additives may be admixed with the polymer with/without the aid of liquids, such as isopropyl alcohol or aqueous media, or may be incorporated with the monomer before polymerization, as illustrated in examples 34 and 35 wherein styrene is the monomer used. Optional composition ingredients are alkyl phosphites as stabilizers and titanium dioxide as pigment. Specification 797,054 is referred to.
