Abstract

894,081. Educational appliances. VAN VALKENBURGH, NOOGER & NEVILLE Inc. April 14, 1958 [Feb. 26, 1958], No. 11810/58. Addition to 851,749 Class 146(2) [Also in Group XVI] The invention of the parent Specification is modified in that the printed matter which is to be concealed is made further difficult to see by printing information in a pattern comprising discrete areas separated by interstices. The apparatus is described in connection with the teaching the understanding of electronic equipment and celestial navigation. In the former an electronic amplifier has developed a fault 21 and the points in the amplifier at which the student investigates are recorded by a number to the right of a sectionally erased or removed part of screens 22-29 which initially cover the printed matter. By showing the sequence of steps he has taken to find the solution, the student shows, not only the answer, but also the manner in which he developed it. For teaching navigation a self-instruction problem simulator comprises a series of questions, the answers to which are concealed. Upon computation of say groundspeed and true heading, see step 2, Fig. 8, an answer is revealed. If computation has been incorrect the answer revealed will give a minus sign or code, e.g. as at 42, 43, 44 and further computations are made until correct answer is found, e.g. 41. Similar steps 3-13 are used to reveal visible response information supplied to the user as he proceeds to compute each of the stages of the problem. Step 14 includes calculations using other navigation equipment and after totalling the number of erasures made, a score is read off on a chart 45. Specifications 851,936 and 858,194 also are referred to.
