Abstract
893,157. Automatic battery-charging control systems. SOC. DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION. Sept. 11, 1959 [July 12, 1958], No. 31091/59. Class 38 (4). An automatic battery-charging system has regulating means whereby the charging voltage is maintained constant whilst the charging current is varied according to the state of the battery together with means for ensuring that the battery is recharged at a high rate after a supply failure for a time proportional to the duration of the failure. A battery 6 is charged by means of a rectifier 2 connected to an alternating current supply 1 by way of a winding 3a of a transductor 3. During charging of the battery 6 a relay 9 is energized by the rectifier 2 to energize a regulating device over a contact 8. The regulating device comprises a pair of transistors T 1 , T 2 ; the base b 1 of transistor T 1 being connected to a point on a potential divider R 1 , R 2 , this point being related to the state of the battery. The transistor T 1 is conductive or not according to the difference between its base potential and a reference potential 10 applied to its emitter e 1 . Transistor T 1 is arranged to control transistor T 2 and hence the current flowing in the winding 3c of the transductor 3 so varying the impedance of a winding 3b in the charging circuit to vary the charging current. Should failure of the A.C. supply 1 occur the relay 9 becomes de-energized, thus connecting a cell 13 and a resistor 15 across the battery 6 by way of a contact 14. Battery 6 only now supplies the load and at the same time charges the cell 13 of the gas-tight alkaline type, which has similar charge and discharge characteristics. Upon resumption of the supply relay 9 is re-energized and the cell 13 discharges through a resistor 16. The base b 3 of a transistor T 3 is thus biased so that transistor T 3 conducts thereby causing transistor T 2 to conduct, overriding the normal control of the transistor T 2 such that the impedance of the transductor 3 remains at a minimum, the battery 6 then being charged at the full rate until the cell 13 is discharged, this period being approximately equal to the time the failure the A.C. supply lasted.
