Abstract

892,668. Moulding sheets from magnesium cement. TECTUM CORPORATION. Oct. 17, 1958 [Oct. 28, 1957; Jan. 9, 1958], No. 33268/58. Classes 22 and 87(2). A magnesium cement with a fibrous filler e.g. wood wool, bagasse, straw or synthetic fibres, is steam cured, whilst compacting it between moving belts. Fibres 1 are formed into a mat on a belt 3, sprayed with cement at 4, and delivered to the nip between perforated stainless steel belts 6, 7 backed by cast iron platens 8, 9. Steam is fed through a pipe 11 into a manifold 10, through the perforations on the lower belt, the moulding material, the upper belt, and out through the exhaust manifold 12. The belts are tensioned by hydraulic cylinders 26 acting on the driving rollers 23. Additional support for the lower belt is provided by rollers 27, 29. The upper belt is carried by a frame 33 which is adjustable vertically by threaded shafts 36. The distance between the belts is kept constant during their passage through the press by locking members 77 on endless conveyers 76. The locking members are moved into and out of operative position by a ratchet handle 94, and they are locked in the operative position by levers 99 operated by a handle 110. The whole machine is arranged in a container 125 through which hot air is circulated to prevent condensation of the steam. The cement may be magnesium oxysulphate or oxychloride cement. The ratio of binder to fibre may be 70 to 30, to 30 to 70, respectively. In a particular example the composition comprises (parts in grams):- Wood fibre (20% moisture) 448, MgO 284, MgSO 4 , 7H 2 O 153, and water 435. The curing time may vary from 30 seconds to 5 minutes.
