Abstract

892,628. Discharge sterilization of liquids. TRAFIKAKTIEBOLAGET GRANGESBERG-OXELOSUND. July 8, 1958 [July 8, 1957], No. 21867/58. Class 49. Liquids are purified and freed from microorganisms by spark or arc discharge of pulsating current of high voltage generated by charging a capacitor from a D.C. source and discharging it through electrodes immersed in the liquid, the pulses and voltage being sufficient to provide a total energy of 0.05 to 5 kWh. per cubic metre of liquid. The process may be applied to waste waters, polluted well water and may be first filtered to remove coarse impurities. Salts and organic impurities flocculated by the electric discharge are filtered off. For example, a conduit for polluted water 2, includes a chamber 12, provided with electrodes 4, 5, one of which is movably controlled by an electromagnet 13. In operation, the electrodes are initially in contact and are separated by pulses from a capacitor charged at 60,000 volts. The discharge spark passes and the electrodes then move into contact until the next electric pulse.
