Abstract

891,666. Ball bearings. H.M.C. WHEELS Ltd. Sept. 15, 1960 [Dec. 9, 1959], No. 41916/59. Class 12 (1). A double-row ball bearing comprises outer and inner sleeves of unground case-hardened metal which have axially spaced ball-ways and balls therebetween. In an embodiment, annular spaces 11 are formed in the outer sleeve 1, Fig. 1, and the inner sleeve includes a middle portion 5 and two end portions 4 which are held together by a tubular liner 6 having ends 7 upset so as to engage chamfered surfaces on the portions 4. The annular spaces 11 contain lubricating grease and are sealed by sealing rings 12 held by spring retainers 13. The spaces 11 also facilitate assembly, the balls being received by the ballways prior to the fixing of the end portions 4. The outer race 1 is knurled at 9 to allow it to be force-fitted into a hole in a wheel for example. A clearance is provided between the outer and inner sleeves. In a further embodiment, the inner sleeve includes two portions 14, 15, Fig. 2, each having an end 17 of increased diameter. In other embodiments, not shown, the portions 14, 15 are separated by a spacing ring, and the annular spacers 11 are reduced, or completely filled, by radially extending the ends of the outer or inner faces.
